Unit 5 Post

Well, after doing the Subtle Mind exercise this week, I found it very relaxing.  To me, it was easier to grasp than the Loving Kindness exercise, because you had a main focal point (your breathing).  However, every now and then, for me, anyway, it was a little hard to stay focused (got to love the 4 year old's timing--lol!).  It took me several tries to keep my mind in one place, and not wanting to go wandering.

As for the connection between spiritual, mental and physical wellness, it's simple.  These parts make up what I call "the human condition"--in other words, it makes us who we are.  When one of these parts is out of sync with the rest, all sorts of things can happen, both to the good and the bad end of the spectrum.

  1. I believe that it also makes us a whole person. It also took me several tries to focus, my mind kept wandering off, lol. But I will keep practicing. Thanks for the post!

  2. Hey Teresa! I had very similar feelings regarding this week's exercise compared to last week's. For me this was because I regularly practice mindful meditation with breathing as a focus, so this came naturally to me. My favorite thing about this style is that it is alright if your mind wanders, you just simply acknowledge the thoughts and return to your focus. While I am getting better at quieting my mind, this style seems like the way to go for me. I am glad you had an enjoyable experience this week!

  3. I also found the subtle mind exercise to be much more relaxing and easier to understand than the loving kindness exercise. I did find them both to be relaxing though. The breathing part in the subtle mind exercise was the part I enjoyed most since it did help me feel relaxed.

  4. Hi Teresa,
I also found this exercise easier then the other ones. I focus on my breathing to relax when I am trying to get to sleep in the morning after a busy night of work and when I go for a run I really focus on my breathing so that my mind isn't thinking about the pain in my knees when I hit the hills lol. When one part of who we are is out of sorts when our other areas are definitely affected whether in a small way or large way. Right now I have a GI bug and I am trying to not focus on all the noise my stomach is making by focusing on my school work. It is helping as long as I stay focused. Have a wonderful day

  5. Teresa-
I also found it hard to keep focus in this weeks exercise. it seemed a little long to me. I will admit the first time I tried it I did fall asleep though because I think I was tired and trying to focus on breathing just made me sleepy. I like your definition of the human condition. Our total selves make us what and who we are and without one aspect things just wouldn't be the same.
